The 96th MLB All-Star Game takes place tonight, July 14th at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, bringing together the game's brightest stars for the annual Midsummer Classic. With the National League looking to build on last year's dramatic victory and the American League aiming to reclaim their victory, this year's game offers a mix of established legends, MVP candidates, breakout stars, and hometown heroes.
Philadelphia provides the perfect stage for the event as the city celebrates America's 250th anniversary year. The host Phillies have a strong presence throughout the roster, while stars from across baseball will look to make their legacy known under the national spotlight.
American League Starting Lineup
Mike Trout, OF, Angels
Yordan Alvarez, DH, Astros
Shea Langeliers, C, Athletics
Junior Caminero, 3B, Rays
Bobby Witt Jr., SS, Royals
Cody Bellinger, OF, Yankees
Ben Rice, 1B, Yankees
Riley Greene, OF, Tigers
Ernie Clement, 2B, Blue Jays
Starting pitcher: Dylan Cease, Blue Jays, started by manager John Schneider for his first career All-Star start.
National League Starting Lineup
Kyle Schwarber, DH, Phillies
Juan Soto, OF, Mets
Freddie Freeman, 1B, Dodgers
CJ Abrams, SS, Nationals
Max Muncy, 3B, Dodgers
Ozzie Albies, 2B, Braves
Brandon Marsh, OF, Phillies
Andy Pages, OF, Dodgers
Drake Baldwin, C, Braves
Starting pitcher: Cristopher Sánchez, Phillies, named by manager Dave Roberts, giving the hometown guy the start.
The American League lineup is led by future Hall of Famer Mike Trout, who will make his 12th career All-Star appearance. For Trout, a South Jersey guy, playing just outside his hometown adds a special emotional element to the game. After battling injuries in recent seasons even including this season, Trout returns to the All-Star game yet again with 18 home runs and an .863 OPS in 78 games this season.
One of my personal favorites is Houston Astros, current AL MVP favorite, Yordan Alvarez, who enters the break as one of baseball's most dangerous hitters. Alvarez has posted a .318 batting average with 31 home runs and 70 RBIs. He has been UNREAL this year and I always thought he was one of the most underrated players in baseball. His presence on my fantasy team has also been quite enjoyable.
For the National League, two hometown boys are featured. Schwarber batting leadoff and Marsh hitting 7th. Juan Soto and Freddie Freeman help headline an unreal lineup. Soto continues to be one of baseball's elite offensive forces, while Freeman is making his 10th career All-Star appearance and remains among the game's most respected veterans. The lefty power in this lineup is going to be quite the sight.
Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero has emerged as one of baseball's breakout performers. The 22-year-old enters the game hitting .279 with 28 home runs and 59 RBIs, earning his second consecutive All-Star start.
Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. continues his upward trend towards being a superstar. A perennial five-tool threat, Witt is batting .286 while showcasing the speed and defensive excellence that make him one of baseball's most exciting players.
The National League features breakout talents such as CJ Abrams, Andy Pages, and rookie catcher Drake Baldwin. Abrams, in particular, has developed into an MVP-caliber player and could be a difference-maker in a game that often relies on one big swing.
The starting pitching duel features Blue Jays ace Dylan Cease for the American League against Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sánchez for the National League. Sánchez's selection is especially meaningful given the game's setting, as the hometown crowd will get to cheer one of its own.
As always in the All-Star Game, however, the bullpens will be even more important than the starters. The game is expected to feature multiple elite relievers capable of consistently reaching triple digits on the radar gun like Mason Miller.
One of the biggest storylines involves the absence of several superstars. Shohei Ohtani, unfortunately, will not participate due to a knee issue, while Aaron Judge, Byron Buxton, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. are also unavailable because of injuries. Their absences have created opportunities for newer stars such as Ben Rice, Riley Greene, and Brandon Marsh to move into larger roles.
The legend picks for tonight include Justin Verlander for the AL (won't pitch but will be honored) and Bryce Harper for the NL, who I am sure will get quite the ovation.
Another storyline is the growing youth movement across Major League Baseball. The 2026 All-Star rosters feature 26 first-time All-Stars, including several rookies. The mix of emerging talent and established greatness gives this year's game a unique feel and offers fans a look into the future of the sport.
The National League appears to have a slight edge. Philadelphia's hitter-friendly ballpark favors the lefty powerful bats of Kyle Schwarber, Juan Soto, Freddie Freeman, and Bryce Harper. However, All-Star Games are notoriously unpredictable. The American League lineup possesses significant power with Alvarez, Caminero, Ben Rice, and Trout capable of changing the game with one swing.
I am going to side with the American League as a Yankees fan, however I root for an excellent game overall. I would love to see either Cody Bellinger or Ben Rice hit home runs as a personal wish.
Prediction: American League 8, National League 6
MVP: Yordan Alvarez. His combination of plate discipline, power, and ability to thrive in big moments makes him the guy to deliver the game changing hit early on.
