(NOTE: Team salary numbers are from fangraphs, team stats are from baseball reference. In this article I will be using dollars spent per win i.e. team salary divided by team wins frequently, so I will abbreviate that to $/W.)
When the dodgers traded for Tarik Skubal, I got a project idea to find the best front office using math. I created 3 stats for this project, those being $eff+, win+, and fop+. I also created 3 ranges, $eff range, win range, and average range.
The formula for $eff+ is (league average $/W divided by team $/W) x 100 rounded to the ones place. The formula for win+ is (Team win% divided by 0.5) x 100 rounded to the ones place. $eff range puts your teams $/W as a percentile of a range consisting of the lowest and highest $/W, and giving you a percentile. Win range does the same thing but swaps $/W with Win%. Average range is pretty self explanatory, it averages out the 2 other ranges into a new range. Fop+’s formula is (team average range divided by league average range) x 100 rounded to the ones place. This is the statistic I will judge teams on. Keep in mind for all mlb stats that end in +, 100 is average and higher is better.
