Frank Lampard’s Sky Blues have soared to the Premier League. Coventry has not seen first divison league football since the 2000-2001 season.

How did they get here? Coventry dominated the Championship and was able to secure the second divison title with a 5-1 win over Portsmouth in late April. Middlesborough were always threatening in mid season but never got over the hump to get in first place, eventually falling to 5th.

Squad overview:

Keepers: Last year it was a major highlight with loanee Carl Rushworth winning the EFL Championship golden glove along with 17 clean sheets. Although Coventry have explored buying him back it doesn’t look likely. This will be a major question mark for the Sky Blues, a major need in the transfer area.

Defenders: While being the best defense in the Championship last season with only 45 goals allowed it severely lacks Premier League experience. New signing Armenda does bring 2 years of Bundesliga experience to help. Mikal van Ewijk is notable with winning 71 tackles last year (2nd in the Championship) the right-back hopes to set a spark in this defense. Bobby Thomas has been a consistent performer for Coventry over his 3 seasons at the club an offensive minded center back getting 7 goals and assists last campaign. Jay Dasilva the left back had a nice campaign last year but has never been out of the EFL league wise. Overall, a good championship defense but a Premier League defense I dunno.

Midfield: The heart of the pitch was very good for Coventry last season in a title winning campaign (as it should in any title winning season). Matt Grimes was a staple in the midfield last season with 80 chances created and 9.14 expected assists compared to his two. Grimes has been a consistent championship performer with Swansea City and Coventry but can it translate to the Premier League? Victor Torp was also a staple getting 17 goals and assists last campaign the 26 year old hopes this championship success will translate to the Premier League again lacking 1st division experience. Frank Onyeka provides the Premier league experience with 5 seasons with Brentford cant say he was the greatest but a good depth piece. Jack Rudoni is also notable with 13 goals and assists last year in 30 matches again with no Premier League experience. Overall, it has some Premier League experience with Frank Onyeka, and was the best midfield in the Championship last year. It will be very interesting how this translates to the Premier League.

Forwards: The American man Haji Wright was the striker for Coventry bagging 17 goals in 40 matches and playing a whopping 2 minutes at the World Cup obviously being overshadowed by Balogun. Tons of potential here with getting 3 goals in 5 matches in the 2025 international season for the U.S. how it stacks up against Premier League defenses is yet to be seen but I like to be optimistic, an FPL signing for many. Loum Tchaouna is the new signing this summer for Coventry from Burnley a good amount of first division experience (Serie A, Ligue 1, and Premier League). He managed 3 goals and assists in 29 Premier League matches only managing 9 shots on target. Left winger Brandon Thomas-Asante bagged 13 goals for Coventry in the Championship and a assist in the World Cup for Ghana. Again lacking Premier League expirence but has 10 matches with 2 goals and assists for Ghana. Others who were notable in Coventrys Championship winning campaign were Ephron Mason-Clark (16 G+A in championship), Ellis Simms (15 G+A in championship), and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto (10 G+A in championship). In conclusion while all of these forwards got goals and assists only two has Premier League experience Ellis Simms (12 matches with Everton), and Loum Tchaouna.

Overall, I think Coventry has the best chance of surviving the Premier League out of the newly promoted clubs, one major question mark is goalkeeper, need to sign someone there. Defense doesn’t look Premier league capable in my opinion, midfield and forwards are the strongest part of this team highlighted by Haji Wright.
