Ahhh the Zidane headbutt. I gotta be honest, I’m on Zidane’s side here. If someone insults your sister you can’t let that shi slide. Tough way to end a legendary career and with Zidane on the field they definitely would’ve had a better chance to win it. Crazy how in only 6 World Cups Italy has gone from champion to kissing the World Cup 3 straight times.

This is a legendary game because of something that had nothing to do with actual football. In the final game of Zinedine Zidane’s historic career, a triumphant 2nd World Cup so close to his grasp, Marco Materazzi got under his skin enough to make Zidane lash out with the most legendary headbutt in football history. In some ways, it’s a shame. Not only does this moment overshadow Italy’s World Cup victory, but it also overshadows the disgustingly gorgeous penalty Zidane scored on Buffon earlier in this game. It truly is serendipitous that Materazzi tied the game up and then was the one to get Zidane sent off in extra time. Maybe none of this happens if Buffon doesn’t save Zidane’s header in extra time. If he scores, we’d be talking about how Zidane capped off his incredible career perfectly. Instead, we’re talking about Zidane defending his family’s honour, a moniker I’m sure he prefers. Besides, he still won the Golden Ball as player of the tournament. He controlled the game to the end

a world cup final that is mostly remembered for zidane's headbutt and red card in extra time. such a weird game for him scoring the only french goal really early in the same and having the worst possible end to his career he could have asked for. some sort of fate for materazzi and zidane this game as both of them were involved in seemingly every important moment in this game. in the end, the italians were the better side at penalties and will always love watching a game with andrea pirlo playing for italy
