This was a pretty fun win for Sunderland! It was mostly even and there were a good amount of chances for both sides, but neither team was able to break through. There were enough opportunities that you knew some team would find the back of the net, and Sunderland did! Their late goal in the 75th minute would be all they needed to hand Fulham another loss! This is a very poor start to the season for Fulham

I expected a season this year much worse than last year's result for Sunderland and it is certainly looking that way so far. They lost to Ipswich who is likely just going straight back down after promotion and then they barely sneak out a win over a Fulham team that I see finishing no higher than 15th and honestly could see getting relegated as well. Great to get that first tick in the win column for Sunderland but I would not be too excited about it if I were a Sunderland fan.

Despite a lack of goal scoring action in the first two thirds of the match, Sunderland and Fulham maintained a fun, fast-flowing match throughout. Sunderland's lack of defensive identity in the first week was completely banished in their return to the Stadium of Light; they showed that the grit that got them to Europe last season is still present. That being said, their continual issues with creativity in the final third cannot be understated (get Trai Hume out of that right wing spot), with their inability to consistently create goal-scoring opportunities popping up constantly – at least until Isidor saw his two chances in the final 20 minutes. One can only hope for more attacking reinforcements in the final days of the transfer window, but hopefully this match is a positive indication that the season will not punish them too harshly if they can't get more moves done.
