A blowout for sure, but one that took a while to fully reveal itself. BYU’s dreams of the playoff may have been crushed in a single play. Ben Roberts swatting and grabbing a Bachmeier pass out of mid-air for the game’s first turnover, which led to a Texas Tech TD on the very next play, put ALL momentum in Texas Tech’s corner. Ben Roberts would add to it with a 2nd interception shortly after, making him the first player in BIG 12 history to get 2 interceptions in the conference championship game. After that, BYU went from falling apart, to collapsing, to falling through the Earth’s crust and to the core. They were physically unable to recover from that. The Red Raiders win their first conference championship in the Big 12 and their first conference title since they won the now-defunct Southwest conference in 1994. Even though this was a blowout, this was a bit of a sexy blowout, plenty of big plays from Texas Tech made this somewhat entertaining, even with minimal drama.

Disappointing after that defensive first half. Congrats to HC Joey McGuire who pursued a college coaching career at 45 years old, was hired by TT in 2022, and now has Texas Tech’s first Big 12 Championship in program history and a Top 4 program in the country bound for a first round bye in the CFP
