Duke controlled the majority of this game and at times it looked like they could run away with it, but Virginia wouldn’t quit! From down 20-10 in the 4th quarter to capping off a miracle drive with a touchdown with 22 seconds left in OT! The only bad thing for the Cavs was that Duke would almost instantly score and for their first play in OT, Virginia would try a flea flicker that would be picked off to seal it for Duke! Ultimate chaos in the soon to be no-bid ACC!

What a fucking ending. In this matchup between the Co-ACC champions of 1989, all the pressure was on Virginia to secure their spot in the playoff with a win against Duke, otherwise they hand it to Tulane. Despite those stakes, Duke actually held the advantage for most of this game. While Virginia eventually made it close, Duke held the game in the palm of their hand for a while. They did have to keep it away from a desperate group of Cavaliers. Sheppard going out of bounds gave Virginia one final chance to save their playoff and ACC hopes. Virginia made a strong effort with some help from fortuitous penalties and sent this game into overtime. In that OT, we got a brief redemption story. It was Sheppard’s costly error that allowed Virginia to drive down the field and tie the game, but he made up for it in OT, bulldozing the Virginia defense to help them get the first TD. Then Duke ended it on an interception. Luke Mergott’s first. Duke becomes the 6th team to win the ACC with 5 losses.
