The Oilers get a tough win mainly thanks to New Brunswick’s 3rd best goalie product Calvin Pickard, who actually played really well. Keeping the theme of strange occurrences, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins celebrated his 990th game by getting into a fight with Neal Pionk. Literally cold cocked him before it. On top of both those factors the Jets outshot the Oilers 42-21 and yet it felt like the Oilers were outplaying the Jets in multiple phases of this game. I think it’s because the Jets kept making mistakes and the Oilers took full advantage. Logan Stanley’s giveaway thanks to Curtis Lazar pressure costs the Jets to give up the first goal. A bad juicy rebound off a Savoie shot from behind the net set up Edmonton’s second goal. Sure, the Jets scored to cut the deficit, but they didn’t threaten Pickard much after that. Even though it wasn’t a shutout, Pickard was genuinely great, nice silver lining for a bad season. McDavid also continues his point streak with an assist on the empty netter.
