Two teams that have fallen well-under expectations desperate to save their seasons gave us a great game. Toronto completed a 4-1 comeback instead of choking that lead. The Leafs and Jets came into this game both having awful ends to 2025 and come into the year 2026 hoping for a fresh start. Instead, they got to remember their consistent issues. For the Jets, it’s their over-reliance on Connor Hellebuyck. Without their MVP level goaltender, their flaws get exposed, mainly their team defense. I would say they’re goalscoring as well, but they actually didn’t suffer in that department partially thanks to their opponent. For the Leafs, their goaltending was also exposed with Woll getting pulled, but Hildeby came up huge in the dying seconds. Matthews also kindly reminded people he is still fully capable of scoring goals by getting a scrappy hat trick today, almost like he isn’t the main problem. That 3rd Matthews goal came after a miscommunication between Comrie and Pionk, sadly fitting.

My two favorite NHL teams faceoff in a New Years day banger. What more could you ask for? Winnipeg scored only 12pts in their last 8 games (1.5 goals per game) but they maintain over triple their pace in this one. Despite this insane Jets pace, a 2-0 first period lead to start, and even a 4-1 lead mid game, the maple leafs wasted no time battling back and winning!
