This matchup brings up some formative hockey memories for me. The back-to-back Cup Finals between the Penguins and Red Wings in 2008 and 09 were cinema. In light of those memories, Crosby was an absolute demon in that 1st period, playing like he did 15 years ago and scoring 2 goals very quickly to put Detroit on their heels. A little easier when there is no “Perfect Human”/Nicklas Lidström to deal with. Despite that early hole, Red Wings flew out of it. JVR was the first step, using his big body to screen the goalie and set up the tip. That gave the Red Wings some momentum after the 1st and Copp used that to immediately tie it up at the start of the 2nd. After getting the leading goal called back (for dubious reasons imo), the Red Wings watched Lizotte give the Pens the lead back. Thankfully, Debrincat saved the day and sent this to overtime. In OT, who else? Sidney Crosby set up the OT winner for Kris Letang in Letang’s 1200th game. How can you not be romantic about hockey?
