This game shouldn’t be surprising and yet I am.We got a great fight at the very start with Anders Lee and Brady Tkachuk. Fights between stars are rare and I thought we were going to get a slugfest. Instead, we got a very tense low-event game with everyone knowing what is at stake. Call it cowardice or playing smart, but nobody on the ice wanted to be the reason nobody their team missed the playoffs. In the end, it came down to which defense and goaltender was more stout. Once again, Ottawa gets something they have rarely gotten this year; great goaltending. Although their defense also deserves a ton of credit. The Islanders D was also doing a better job, preventing Ottawa from creating chances in even strength. The issue was the special teams. That giveaway on the powerplay cost them dearly and Greig of all people scored the game winner off of it. The Islanders tried to make a push. They just couldn’t generate a ton of chances and Ullmark just shut the door each time.
