Pretty good game that started strong and limped over the line. Did you think the NHL playoffs were out of chaos because Buffalo was out? WRONG! Montreal is still around and chaos is apparently their middle name. Even by their lofty standards, the start of this game was NUTS. 3 goals in less than 4 minutes! Carolina scored 30 seconds into the game and Montreal scores 4 unanswered goals! Absolutely bonkers. After that though, Carolina played their style: relentless forechecking. Just 2 problems with that. First, they couldn’t convert. No matter how many chances they got, Carolina just couldn’t beat Dobeš. Either they’d blow the chance or a save would be made. Second and more significantly, Carolina’s forecheck left them vulnerable from the back which Montreal took FULL advantage of and got rush chance after rush chance mixed with some breakaways. Hurricanes made a hard push in the 2nd, but ran out of gas in the 3rd. 1st period was awesome! 2nd was cool. 3rd was not fun at all.

BEN OUI TABARNAK.

I really didn’t expect this result, but I’m very happy with it. Wasn’t a super exciting game, but if this is what the rest of the series is like, I don’t mind. I doubt it will be though, very much expecting the Canes to come back.

Crazy weird game. Hurricanes score quick in the first and it was "here we go" but then the Canadiens scored 4 and man oh man Freddy Andersen and that Canes defense looked bad. Nick replied to me after game 7 and did say the Canes had to get the rust of their skates. They did not. Hopefully it'll be off for game 2. That 11 day (2nd longest of all time) has a big factor tonight

Carolina got out to about as hot a start as they could ask for by scoring 33 seconds in, but that lead would only last for 27 seconds before the Canadiens answered back! Montreal was able to pour it on after that for the game 1 dub! Looks like the Hurricanes can lose

A very expected showing by the Habs (NO ONE GETS BACK TO BACK LOSSES ON THE MONTREAL CANADIENS!!!) while the Hurricanes, who've passed these playoffs with flying colors, might be falling into another conference final failure. Well, the preceding big break didn't help. Rusty in bookending periods, as they let the Habs jump to a 4-1 lead in a hot first period. The first goal by the Hurricanes 33 seconds in the game was met with a typical sport roar by the Carolina audience. Contrast that to the Slafkovsky empty-netter which resulted in a mass exodus of fans. Canadiens took their foot off the gas for a whole twenty minutes and Jakub Dobes only gave up one goal. If the Canadiens want to move on, they must hope that the Hurricanes were as faulty as they were today. If the Hurricanes want to move on, they must hope that the Canadiens were only off to a hot start, AND to come into Game 2 as the monster they've been all postseason.

The game was an absolute statement performance right from the opening puck drop. A massive four-goal explosion in the first period completely took the home crowd out of it and built a cushion that was never truly threatened. Carolina tried to push back, but every single answer was matched to cruise to a dominant blowout victory to open the series!

The first period was explosive, and a statement from the frisky Habs: don't take us lightly! Despite the quick first strike from Carolina, Montreal unleashed a barrage to bury the favorites in the East. The rest of the game was underwhelming in comparison, though the Hurricanes' only other goal was an exciting rebounder.
