Of course a terrible loss for the USA, but what a performance by Tim Howard. A World Cup record 16 saves, forced it to extra time against a Belgian side that was expected to beat the US easily. Unfortunately in extra time, it was Kevin De Bruyne and Romelo Lukaku, who to this day are still prominent members of Belgium's squad, who scored the two goals for Belgium. One of the most iconic games in USMNT history even though it ended with a loss, and it will always be remembered as Tim Howard's game.

The Tim Howard Game. Howard very nearly single handedly won the USA this game. Despite all the incredible goalkeeping performances in this year’s tournament, none of them were able to break or even tie Howard’s record for most saves that he set in this game. It’s fascinating looking back on this game because it was basically a battle between 2 supposed golden generations at opposite sides of the spectrum. The USA’s was going through their last dance while Belgium’s was in their first major tournament as a group. Despite the disparity in experience, Belgium dumped an avalanche of shots onto the USA. Tim Howard stopped shot after shot, keeping the USA in the game against all odds. It looked like extra time was inevitable until the dying seconds when Chris Wondolowski was all alone only to shank the shot. Extra time came and De Bruyne finally broke the deadlock and, as he did 12 years later, Lukaku gave Belgium valuable insurance to hang on for the win. Valiant effort from Tim Howard.

In 2014 I was 23 years old and working at the Grand Hyatt New York which sits atop Grand Central Station and was Hyatt's flagship hotel at the time with over 1,300 rooms. I was at work during this game but my job was to oversee the dishwashers and manage the silverware and glassware for the many restaurants and corporate banquet space at the property. So I casually made it known that I would be monitoring the main bar at the very front if the hotel to ensure they wouldn't run out of steins and pints. I also invited my friends and in between "working" we watched the match together. Needless to say it was one of those core memories that will always be tinted and sad because of how close Wondo was. TO think that 12 years later we would face them again and have an even worse result just goes to show you how far behind US Soccer is from the rest of the footballing world.

Belgium owns the US in the World Cup round of 16, although at least this time the US sent it to extra time

The secretary of defense was left to die… Tim Howard single handedly is my favorite American player of all time, and watching this game proves me right, amazing effort but Belgium is just too strong.

extremely mean to put this as the classic the same week after the utter embarrassment the usmnt put up last week. nonetheless this game was objectively unreal and created tim howard as the secretary of defense. a world cup record with saves and its so unfortunate we couldn't put an offense together to match his performance. wondolowski unfortunately ends up becoming a living meme with one of the worst misses i had ever seen at the time. the first heartbreak i experienced as a usmnt fan
