I called it that this would be the Throwback Thursday today. Incredible World Cup hat trick by Ronaldo. Started things off in the 3rd minute, absolutely beautiful form on his flop to get the PK. Wouldn't be a Ronaldo hat trick without a PK! In the 24th minute, we saw the first good goal of the game, and man that dribblinb by Diego Costa was incredible. Just back and forth somehow was able to set up a shot and it was perfect. Then right before half, Ronaldo was set up just outside the box and hit a good shot that just barely deflected off the keeper for goal #2. Then Spain with a perfect set piece, getting the ball into the box and setting up Costa for the tap-in for his second. Spain then scored their third to make it 302, setting up the scene for Ronaldo's final goal of the hat trick. And what a goal it was. Off a free kick, absolutely sniped it top corner. Great performance by Ronaldo, but Messi's a couple days ago was better. Ronaldo will always be #2 behind Messi.

Knew it. As soon as Messi scored his hat trick, Throwback Thursday became obvious. This game is not only incredible to look back on, but it is a great reminder of what Cristiano Ronaldo used to be. At this time, CR7’s GOAT case was as strong as it ever would be. He was coming off a Champions League 3-peat and victory in the 2016 Euros. Even with that victory, Portugal would go as far as CR7 would take them.
Heading into their first group game against Spain, everyone knew this was the game to watch. A win could all but guarantee a spot in the knockouts. Spain controlled the match… when they had the ball. Defending CR7 was a different story. He immediately scored a pen to give Portugal the lead. Spain tied it up, only for CR7 to score again. Spain then took the lead back in the 2nd half and CR7 gave us his most iconic World Cup moment: a free kick into the top corner in the 87th minute to level it back up and salvage a point. Without that point, Portugal don’t make it out of the groups.

will always remember where i was when watching this game. the best group stage game that i've ever seen. i just remember thinking that the second portugal were awarded the free kick they might as well have just given portugal a goal. it felt like destiny that ronaldo was scoring that to complete the world cup hat trick

We’ll talk about carrying your team to victory. Rolando had three goals and had a 9.7 march average, he also went 34/37 on passes. He shot three times and all of them were on net. He also had one block and one clear. He was fouled 4 times. Spain literally could not stop him, he was untouchable. I’m not going to compare the hat tricks of Messi 2026 and Rolando 2018. I still think Messi is the goat. Diego Costa also had a fantastic game, he scored two goals and help Spain hold on to a tie. My boy David De Gea was terrible. He had a match average of 4.2. He could not stop a beach ball… overall great game.
