In 1795, the United States of America and Regency of Algiers signed a treaty titled, this is genuine, a Treaty of Peace and Friendship. It brought great unity, peace, and friendship to the two countries, and it was a good step in the right direction for two lands that needed to develop. Unfortunately, It did not count for soccer matches that would occur 200 years later. I’ve never heard of this game, and that might have to do with how little USMNT is represented in the public eye, but with the World Cup coming to the United States, it’s always nice to look back on how we have done when duty has called. Forced to win to advance, after being robbed previously, left the United States only one option. Unfortunately for our good friends, who we have friendship and peace with, they seemed to be in our way. I’m hoping we can get some classic stuff in the near future similar to this, and I hope it is with their enemies because I value friendship, but above all, I value our country. Go, Go USA!

Absolutely insane. The 2010 World Cup was amazing. In this one, 90+ minutes of 0-0 soccer. Not a goal scored. Algeria had an incredible chance to score in the 91st minute, but a header was saved by Tim Howard, leading to an immediate counter attack. The US. Jozy Altidore set up Clint Dempsey for an amazing opportunity, but Rais M'Bohli made a save. Luckily, he couldn't corral it, allowing for Landon Donovan to take the rebound and score. Absolutely inrcedible game. A really good game that gave us USA’s greatest soccer moment since making it to the quarter finals in 2002. As always, context is key. If you think the USA is arrogant, let me introduce you to England. When the 2010 World Cup draws were completed and England’s group was revealed, The Sun published the infamous EASY cover. They took the first letter of each group member, England, Algeria, Slovenia and USA (Yanks) to write EASY while implying England had gotten a very fortunate group. Well, heading into the final group game, USA had the chance to give England a massive middle finger while stealing the group at the death. Also they needed to win in order to qualify for the round of 16.
In the final minutes, the USA got the ball and ran on the counter attack. They needed a goal to stay alive. It was likely their last chance. Dempsey went in, got stopped and Landon Donavon flew it like a fighter jet to score the winner and clinch the group for the USA while forcing England to eat crow.

Listen everyone. I understand that the States might not be the biggest or the baddest team. But we got something that nobody else has. And it’s not rednecks. We have an ungodly amount of delusion. We have all seen the miracle movie with the USA hockey team and how they beat the USSR. Every team we play in this tournament will be like that. We gotta fight. So! As I sit here today. I don’t care if you’ve never watched soccer before. Pretend you have! Pretend we are the best team in the world! We are the United States for shits sake. “THAT EAGLE WILL” pretend that we can do this thing. And when we bring it home… we won’t have to pretend.
Anyway about the game. I’m so proud to share a name with Landon Donavon. A true icon in American soccer. The US makes it out of group C and goes to the knockouts.

a game i have very very few memories of so it mostly is down to highlights. every time the WC comes around the Landon Donovan goal is shown and is referred to as one of the more important goals in USMNT history. the country is desperate for a moment like this in the next few weeks. this basically felt like a knockout stage game as a draw would have sent us home
