I still remember watching the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. That Spain team was solid, disciplined, and tactically brilliant. Despite losing their opening game, they went on to become world champions. A memory I'll never forget. This 2026 Spain team also looks solid and tactical, and I hope they go all the way and lift the trophy again.

The peak of Tiki-Taka and Spain’s legendary golden generation ironically came in the World Cup Final that set the record for most yellow cards handed out in a Final with 14. 47 fouls were committed in this game. It’s been over a decade since I last watched this game in-full, but I’m sure you imagine all those fouls slowed this game down to a crawl, especially with the most egregious Dutch foul. I will always be baffled that Nigel De Jong didn’t get sent off after fully kicking Xabi Alonso in the chest. All that chaos didn’t mean there was nothing to look back on fondly. Iker Casillas didn’t have much to deal with thanks to Spain’s legendary midfield and defence, but when he was called on in the 2nd half to stop Robben all alone, he made the big save with his toe to keep it 0-0. Then, in the 110th minute, Fabregas gave Andres Iniesta the chance of live out a childhood dream and he buried the shot to win Spain the World Cup. A historic game with some amazing moments held back by fouls.

I don’t remember much of this game but I do remember where I was and who I was with. I was 16 years old on a youth group trip to Israel and they had set up a big screen for us to watch with fold out chairs in a room in the hotel we were staying at… and I remember being in the minority rooting for Spain and just the feeling of sticking to my guns despite the peer pressure to want to root with the majority of the group. That’s some strong teen intuition right there!

Maybe not the best match in history for the neutral fan, but as a Spanish fan, it has been stuck on my brain for 16 years now, and counting. Everything seems mystical about this final. The Casillas' save, the (should have been) red card tackle to Xabi Alonso, the Iniesta's goal when everyone thought we would go into penalties... I remember vividly who I was with watching this, where I was and how I celebrated it. It's one of those nights one will never forget, and cherish back when being older (as I am doing right now) Days before our second WC final, this has surely shed some tears through the years. And whatever happens on Sunday, this final will long live in our memories.

As a new soccer fan I've seen Iniesta's goal many times, with the celebration of his taking his jersey off to reveal "Dani Jarque siempre con nosotros" in honor of his close friend and another Spanish player Dani Jarque who had passed away the year before the World Cup. Absolutely beautiful tribute on an incredible goal in a deadlocked 0-0 game in extra time. Before now I actually didn't know about the score of this game, only about Iniesta's goal and celebrationg, and that one absolutely incredible save by Iker Casillas. Can Spain take home their second World Cup trophy on Sunday?

14 yellow cards is insane for soccer match at the biggest stage. Really the downfall of Netherlands was going down to 10 men and losing because of all those fouls. A great and historic game of resilence for Spain and they look to do it again on Sunday.

i have very distinct memories of watching part of this game live. i believe this was my real introduction to soccer outside the MLS. i've gone back and watched more highlights but everyone always talks about the physicality of this game, and the game winning goal from iniesta. this was the absolute peak of spain and the tiki taka era. won a world cup in between back to back euros. the dutch really could only resort to trying to drag spain down and get physical with them and it almost got them to pens. great wc final. great wc winning team. cant believe nigel de jong didnt get a red for that xabi alonso tackle
