Tomorrow would’ve been Jose Fernandez’s 34th birthday. I wasn’t a baseball fan when this happened, but I can safely say I know what it’s like when a beloved athlete dies suddenly. The news is hard to accept, let alone move on from. On September 26th, 2016, the Marlins found a way. Dee Gordon did exactly that perfectly when he batted first for Miami. He first replicated Jose’s batting stance, then cracked a home run before running around the bases with tears in his eyes. It was a genuinely beautiful moment. The Marlins used that momentum to take this game with ease, but his first at-bat will live in baseball lore forever. That moment alone is a high 9 for me, but the rest of the game drags down the rating.
As a side note: holy shit this Marlins team is a who’s who of hitters. Obviously you have the most famous names: Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich and JT Realmuto. But you also have Ichiro, Miguel Rojas and Derek Dietrich. Such a unique and insanely promising team in hindsight.

Jose Fernandez meant so much to the city of Miami and he was such an inspirational story, but he made one of the worst decisions anybody has ever made. That decision cost him and others their lives. That decision shouldn’t be forgotten, but he should also be remembered for all of the good he did. RIP Jose Fernandez

Jose Fernandez was primed to become a special pitcher. Even in 2016 he had a great chance at winning the Cy Young. 16-8, 2.86 ERA. Late in the season, with the Marlins out of the playoff race, the Marlins decided to give Jose Fernandez an extra day of rest before his next start, so with Fernandez not starting the next day, he went out that night. After hours out at night, likely high, drunk, or both. Fernandez boarded a boat early in the morning, and crashed, tragically taking his and two friends lives. Fernandez looked like one of the best young pitchers in baseball, fully recovered from a 2014 Tommy John, and looked like he was about to win his first of many Cy Youngs. And a few bad decisions one night took that all away. The Marlins had an incredible tribute for Fernandez, all wearing his jersey, and Dee Gordon, leading off the game, took the first pitch righty in Fernandez' batting stance, and then switched to lefty and hit his only home run of the season. RIP Jose Fernandez

As a resident of the city of Miami. I want to be insightful towards the aftermath of the death of Jose Fernandez. Even if he survived the tragic boat crash, he would be in prison for vehicular manslaughter. He was found with a lot of coke in his system and when the marlins found this out, they cancelled a statue to be built in his honor. He was even supposed to have a jersey retirement ceremony. But they never did due to the fact that he was at fault. Many people forget about this. It’s a shame that he and people has to die under tragic and avoidable circumstances. Pushing that aside. He was my favorite Cuban baseball player to ever play. Such a shame he and his friends had to die. What could’ve been 💔

So I have a playlist of just sports moments for whenever I am needing to feel something. It can be any emotion happy, sad, hyped, etc.. I have Dee Gordon hitting that leadoff home run on this playlist. That moment was so special for the game a baseball and sports in general. José Fernández should be remembered for all of the great things he did for not just the sport of baseball, but sports as a whole. RIP #16
