I mean, come on. If this game isn’t a 10, pretty much nothing is. One of the greatest moments in sports history, let alone hockey history. Even as a Canadian, my dad has told me stories of rooting for the USA. The Soviet Union was a Goliath. A juggernaut. No matter what you call them they were basically unstoppable. They were so good that they didn’t practice pulling the goalies because they never trailed in the 3rd period. Despite all that, a group of random college kids managed to pull off the greatest upset in sports history. On top of that history, this was an incredible game. Mike Eruzione scores a goal to take the lead with 10 minutes left and the USA team held on for dear life to beat the Russians. In the dying seconds, Al Michaels, alongside legendary goaltender Ken Dryden, would ask a question that still rings through the ears of hockey players to this day. “Do you believe in miracles?!” It feels like something out of a movie. I wish I had been alive to see it happen.

I recently watched The Boys of '80 on Netflix and cannot recommend it enough as it transports you back in time and properly sets the stage. We often wish that sports and politics weren't so deeply intertwined. However, in the arena of international competition, that is rarely the case. Never more apparent than during the 1980 Winter Olympics, where a high-stakes showdown between the USA and the Soviet Union took place at the very peak of the Cold War. I happen to have family from Lake Placid and have visited the Olympic Center and Village many many times in my life. Being born in 1990 I didn't really appreciate the gravity of this game when I was a kid and was told about it. Herb Brooks was the most ruthless competitive Coach you've ever seen, the fact that we had our best college kids vs Soviet Professional Hockey Players, the 2 goal 3rd period and the most legendary call in all of sports. The question is rhetorical but we answer it anyways: Do you believe in miracles? YES!

I obviously did not watch this live but we have seen the movie and the game. Peak hockey and peak sports. Rest in peace Herb Brooks, a wonderful member of hockey and society. "Great moments are born from great opportunity"

You know what fulfills a group of dudes who just want to have a good time? Making it a great time. Could have been sweating profusely and still would have won this Cold War.

What the true definition of legend is in sports history. You hear this game talked about from commentators that are not even fans of Hockey. I think everyone from the era can tell you about hearing of it and that it truly was a David and Goliath story in sports. Something I think everyone sports fan should at the least learn something about it. Wish I could have been more cognizant to know the thoughts of people around me were on it.

I’m far from a hockey guy, but you don’t need to be to know this was a historic game. I swear, I’ve seen this game in literal textbooks. Can’t be anything but a 10.
