This is such an incredible way to make it into the World Cup for DR Congo. They struck in the 5th minute with a goal but it was called back for offside, and then there was no scoring for the entirety of regulation. While I find it quite boring, there is some beauty to a game that’s just a defensive battle all the way through. Then finally, in the 100th minute, they finally scored off a corner kick and the fans just absolutely erupted. DR Congo is headed to their first World Cup under that name. Their reward? They immediately get to play Ronaldo and Portugal. Just imagine the scene if, no WHEN, they pull off that historic upset. 🇨🇩🇨🇩🇨🇩

Damnit! I wanted Jamaica to win this sooooo badly. I’m a huge Bob Marley fan but other than him I no nothing about the country or team. The Congo really surprised me with how they put up with this Jamaican side. The Congo will reach their first World Cup since 1974. A goal in the 100th minute is simply cool. Jamaica only had one shot on goal, that can’t happen in a game like this. They did take 53% of the possession. Hopefully this team will be back in 2030, let’s go back to out “ roots, rock, reggaeeee play some reggae music”

The DR Congo outlasts Jamaica in extra time with a 100th minute winner from Axel Tuanzebe and will join Portugal’s group in the World Cup

The chaotic world of African football meets the structuralist world of North American football. Chaos prevailed and the Democratic Republic of Congo has qualified for their first ever World Cup (first since 1974 if we include Zaire’s history). The game started out slow. Jamaica was doing a good job at suppressing Congo’s attack at the cost of their own as they couldn’t get much themselves. By halftime, it looked like that would continue all the way into an inevitable extra time. Not so fast, the Congo’s build up got more fluid and kept Jamaica on their heels, but that extra time did some as prophesied. Despite that, I personally felt like it was only a matter of time and that’s when the hero of this story introduced himself. Axel Tuanzebe scored the game’s first goal off of a corner and then helped hold the line by making crucial interceptions to help the Congo do something their nation hasn’t seen in decades. The Congo could’ve easily won by more if not for some crazy Blake saves.
