Sometimes I wonder why I expect good things from this team. The Phillies are not World Series contenders. They may make the playoffs but they’re not good enough. But neither are the Marlins. The Marlins are far too inconsistent between the offense and the bullpen to be able to pull enough wins together. I’m thankful for our great starting pitchers (Sandy, Eury, Max Meyer) and the few bullpen guys who have been amazing and Griffin Conine. I don’t want to call it a season now but there are only 35 games remaining and the Marlins would need to win most of those games to deserve to make the playoffs. Not to mention they also face all playoff teams in September excluding the Royals and Mets. If they want to see October, they need to pull it together quick.

Close game until the 6th and even then I still thought the game was in the balance. The Marlins had their chances to scrap out a win despite themselves. They just couldn’t execute when they needed to most. Better than getting a whooping for sure, but how do you let Alec Bohm clutch up on you twice? Marlins went with an opener and opted for a bullpen game. I’ll never be a big fan of it, but it looked like it was going to work… until Michael Peterson’s turn came up and we entered the 6th inning. It was a bad omen when he hit the first batter he faced. The Phillies battered him before the Marlins brought in Tyler Phillips who couldn’t fully stop the bleeding without giving Marlins fans some aneurysms right before. To make that sequence even worse, Miami had just caught a break in the top of the inning, only to have it be wasted. Marlins made it interesting in the final 2 innings, even cutting into their 3-run deficit, but it wasn’t enough to scare the Phillies. Not pretty, just effective.
