If you ask me to think of crazy endings to World Series games, this one will immediately come to mind. Journeyman Brett Phillips up to bat, runners on 1st and 2nd, 2 outs. I distinctly remember Joe Buck saying Phillips hadn’t even played in the ALCS. The count eventually reaches 1-2, down to the last strike. Then, it happens. Phillips hits a single into the gap, Chris Taylor fumbles the ball, then gets it into the infield when Arozarena is stumbling between 3rd and home, only for Will Smith to drop the ball and Randy to slide into home while hitting home plate. An absolutely insane ending to an incredible game punctuated by Phillips’s instantly iconic airplane celebration. Fun fact: Phillips has said that he was so out of breath after that he needed an IV. This series was the Rays vs. The Rays with money, so naturally most people were rooting for Tampa Bay. The Dodgers still had a choking reputation at the time and this moment and game made many believe the Rays could actually win it.

ITS FINALLY ON RATEGAME!!! The game that made me a Rays fan! For those of you who don't know which might be all of you I got into baseball during covid and I love to root for the underdog and boy were these guys underdogs this game was absolute insanity! It's not a stretch to say that this game is why I'm watching baseball to this day. They might have lost this series but they'll have a fan forever in me because of this game! I miss you both Phillips and Arozerana 🥹. We'll win this year in your honor!!!

There are 5 key people you need for this game. Kenley Jansen, Chris Taylor, Will Smith, Randy Arozarena, and Brett Philips (keep that name in mind.) 9th inning, game is tied 7-7 with Brett Phillips up to bat, who is know not to be great. Let’s skip to the action, Phillips is at a 1-2 count, runners on first and second. Jansen deals, and it’s rocketed out to the outfield bouncing along the grass for a hit. As the ball rolls fast to the Dodgers center fielder (Chris Taylor), he attempts to scoop it and get a throw in but he misses it and the ball gets by, Arozarena moving his way to home plate as the ball sails toward the Dodgers catcher, Will Smith. Jansen standing behind him incase nothing happens, but as Arozarena is running toward home plate, they have him. Until Will Smith holds his left joystick and does a spin, making the ball come loose. Arozarena scores, Rays win and a legendary Brett Phillips photo is taken. Even though we lost this game, still a great ending.

Rewatching Brett Phillips AB just now and my immediate thought was how much the pitch clock & ABS have fundamentally changed the game. Kenley was taking anywhere from 30-45 seconds in between each pitch. On his 4th pitch of the AB he throws one that was low and outside but a called strike 2. In a game today in that situation I imagine Brett is tapping the helmet immediately. Another nugget from this one - the site of the World Series was on a neutral field at Globe Life in Texas. The crowd noise is noticeably softer due to social distancing rules in effect. Despite all this it's still an awesome walk off win complete with a Dodger disaster class at home plate. Joe Buck calling baseball is the way it's meant to be.

What a strange time for sports in general. I feel what everyone misses about this game was it was during the COVID delayed season which made this just such a wild watch. There was only about 25% of the stadium full for this game. With a game like this you would expect so many pops from the crowd but instead it was very quiet and just made for an enviroment where you felt like you were the only one watching this game. COVID was such a weird time for sports and created some... interesting enviroments

When I was a rays fan. I was so excited for this series. Randy Arozarena was building his playoff legacy all by this year alone. Them almost blowing a 3-1 lead to the Astros, then this series. A little glimmer of hope for the rays as they still have no World Series titles. Man… what could’ve been.

The greatest moment in the history of the Tampa Bay Rays, not counting Game 162. What a magical run this was for them, that whole squad brings back memories.
