Back and forth. Missed opportunities all game. 3 times hitting the crossbar. And finally, in the 90th minute, Amad Diallo broke through. Incredible win for Ivory Coast to start off their World Cup campaign. Oh Ecuador I really feel for them hitting the crossbar three times in a row when they should’ve scored it would be in the goalkeeper. It would’ve smashed into the back than that. They should’ve been up 2 maybe three nil and for the Ivory Coast to come in and clinch it at the 90th minute heartbreaking

A slobberknocker in every way that ends with a bit of an upset. Going in, this was one of the most fascinating matchups. I had a ton of faith in Ecuador, but knew Ivory Coast couldn’t be overlooked. Both teams boast super strong defences and this game played to the tune of that fact. There were chances, but it was a battle of the back lines. For most of the game, I’d say Ecuador was winning that battle, especially in the first half when Ecuador’s attackers hit the crossbar multiple times. If any of those shots go in, this game has a completely different story as Ivory Coast was struggling to find many gaps.
The Ivorians never gave up, they just held strong and gradually gained control of the game. Diomande was carving through Ecuador and their big central midfielders began shifting the balance of power until Diallo hit a beautiful curve on his shot that just barely avoided a defender and keeper to win the game for Ivory Coast. In the end, it was ironically wing-play that decided it.
