Mollie suggested we watch this one on Telemundo and it did not disappoint. The announcers lost their minds on both of Mexicos golazos. The golazos were glorious. The weather delay = mas cervesas for the Mexican faithful and the place was rockin. Ecuador was overwhelmed and exhausted. Shoutout commercials in Spanish yo quiero MAC DONALS

The beautiful country of Mexico is having a country-wide party right now.. They finally played a match worthy of some celebrating tbh. They completely suffocated Ecuador and had two beautiful shots for both their goals. The Telemundo commentators just about lost their minds especially on the second goal. Ecuador got their win against Germany, but ultimately disappointed once again in World Cup play.
Playing in Mexico until the quarter-finals is the biggest advantage they currently have and I hope this run continues

The Estadio Azteca was rocking! Excellent vibes if you are Mexican and/or rooting for Mexico. The vibes were very poor if you are Ecuadorian and/or rooting for Ecuador. I actually fell into both camps so I can relate on both sides. Fittingly, this game was kinda mid. Mexico scored a couple beautiful blasts past Ecuador and the Ecuadorians just never recovered. Between a bunch of hard tackles and what felt like a thousand crosses, they just never threatened Mexico’s goalkeeper. The fact they had only 1 shot on target despite comfortably dominating the possession battle in the 2nd half while down 2 goals should tell you everything. Couldn’t even get the penalty in stoppage time to add some artificial drama. While Ecuador’s struggles in this game are a microcosm of their disappointing run in this tournament, it’s also a credit to Mexico’s defence. It’s why they won a World Cup knockout game for the first time since 1986, coincidentally the last time the World Cup was held in Mexico.

WHAT A GAME. GILBERTO MORA IS DEFINITELY A FUTURE STAR TO WATCH OUT FOR. precise touches and control of the ball, dictating the tempo of the game from midfield, an absolute joy to watch. Raul should have gotten more goals, except bro couldn’t finish. Ecuador had a brilliant finesse shot saved in the first half and mexico were just unlucky not to score more due to the heroics of the ecuadorian keeper. Hopefully we get to see the mexico team against England in the next round

Mexico played a perfect first half—maybe one of the best by any team in this World Cup. Aguirre did the unexpected and won the tactical battle against Beccacece. Mora and Alvarado completely destroyed Hincapié and Angulo on the flanks, while Quiñones is playing at a sublime level and making a massive difference.
The atmosphere in the stadium was out of this world. I have been to over 60 games at the Azteca, but this one was beyond epic.
