This game was on its way to being a 10, but the weak penalty call that won it for Belgium 🇧🇪 brought it down a peg. Still an amazing game, though. These knockouts have been incredible so far.

Not very similar to the other tournament games played at Lumen Field this year, and, that’s for the best. I want to give everybody credit for trying their hardest obviously, not that they continue to do that when it mattered, but just beautiful sights all around. The last time that a team that predominantly wore red and yellow came to this great stadium it was not in their best interest, I am glad to tell the world that that kind of happened again this day. You teach a man to fish, he will feed himself for life. You teach a man to speak, he will talk sometimes.

My confirmation bias was ringing for the first 80 minutes. I was so ready to brush off Belgium as total frauds who were easily the weakest group winner. They may have looked the worst one after the group stage, but they have emerged the superior team today, somehow. Senegal ran roughshod up and down the pitch for those first 80 minutes. Belgium looked completely clueless when it came to figuring out how to both stop Senegal and convert on any of their own chances. That changed at 80 minutes as Belgium finally looked to be gaining some ground. Still, even when they scored, it felt more like a consolation goal. ‘At least you didn’t embarrass yourselves’ kind of deal. But then Tielmans somehow won a header at 5 foot 9 against towering defenders to tie it. Senegal could only hang onto it for extra time. Belgium won it miraculously in extra time, but how they did it holds this game back from a 9+. That penalty took like 10 minutes to figure out and Senegal’s nothing burger muffled the hype.

HOLY SHIT. WHY DO AFRICAN TEAMS STOP PLAYING AFTER 85 MINUTES. Senegal played so well, they had a great off-ball shape, but Lakaka decided he was gonna wake up from his decade-ling slumber. Crazy game.

Can’t believe Belgium were able to come back partly thanks to Lukaku’s surprising goal. Honestly felt Senegal were the better team even after Belgium tied, they just ran out of gas and luck. Unfortunate loss.

Belgium with a huge comeback to tie the game 2-2 after being down 2 with 10 minutes to go and sending the game to extra time wher Belgium get a penalty 2 minutes before extra time is up and Belgium was able to score and win the game before a penalty shootout

Absolutely insane finish. I had Senegal winning this and 85 minutes in, it seemed like I was correct. Yet again, Belgium's offense was a complete disappointment. Senegal with a 2-0 lead going into the 84th minute then Lakaku scores ok whatever doesn’t matter then Tielmens scores and your thinking holy shit. It goes to ET and in the second half of ET the ref goes to VAR for a potential penalty for Belgium and they award it. And Belgium fucking scores holy shit
