The Egyptians take down Australia in penalties! Absolute heartbreaking defeat for the Australians. They gave Egypt a run for their money and came so close to taking them down in the fancy to the round of 16. Mohammad Salah showed his true Captain colors toughing the game out while playing through an injury playing 120 minutes and scoring a penalty. I do have to say this was a horrible coaching job from Australia. Beach had been great all day then you sub him out for Ryan who did not even touch the ball in pens. And they sent a freaking 18 year old CENTER BACK up there! He broke his heart hitting that bar. Australia sent defenders up to win an attackers game. It’s like bringing a sword to a gun fight. This sucks for Australia, I hate it for them. Hopefully they will be back in 2030. I picked Egypt and got it right. Still need a miracle to win this tournament. But we have all seen NC State in 1983. “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up”

So close for the socceroos😂😂😭😭I was pulling heavy for my Aussie brothers in this game and I thought pregame this would be a 1-1 that went to extras. I was just hoping Australia would gut it out in extras but Egypt played hard and dragged the game to a shootout and the Aussies just couldn’t finish. This Egypt team could be a massive sleeper going into the round of 16

Out with family at the pool for the afternoon, but got home perfectly in time for the penalty shootout. Learned that Australia has a goalkeeper reserved for penalty shootouts. He already entered with a disadvantage, as teams with guys named Matt Ryan have a history of choking in big games. Perfect start to it as Australia’s first kicker Gabriel’d it. Seemed immediately like that Ryan guy was a bit overhyped as a shootout specialist, as he jumped the right way but just didn’t get a hand up to save it, then on the next one got fooled and dove the wrong way. Then Salah, the only guy in this game I’m really rooting for, sent it perfectly down the middle and got Ryan to dive out of the way. Then a crossbar for Australia and Egypt ends it. So many terrible PKs so far in this round of 32. Hilarious to see Australia go out, so funny them thinking it was a rivalry with us they just suck lmaoooo SALAH IS MOVING ON!!!!

Not a fast game, but certainly an intense one. Despite what the pick’em picks will tell you, this was a total toss up going into it and it played out like it. Australia and Egypt had their moments and although I’d say Egypt ultimately had the edge in the 120 minutes, this game felt like it could’ve gone either way. Even when Egypt scored early to make it 1-0, it didn’t feel like Australia was out of it. They got their chances, became more and more threatening before creating the own goal from a set-piece that they only got because Egypt was on their heels. Patrick Beach made a huge save right before the end of 90 minutes to keep Australia alive and had to keep making saves to keep Australia in it as the Pharaohs wouldn’t let them have their turn with the ball. Then, the moment that will be remembered happened, Australia brought in penalty specialist Matthew Ryan for Patrick Beach; a move that has good precedent with Tim Krul back in 2014, but Australia blowing their penalties cost them

This round of 32 hasn’t stopped with the drama. What i thought would be an easy win for Egypt especially after they scored first turned into a back and forth game that went all the way to penalties. Then as the Aussies always do, they lost in crazy fashion. Taking out the keeper to put in the backup for him to miss every save and leave the last penalty to a 18 year old. Needless to say though, great game
