It doesn’t feel like nearly 4 years have passed. I remember this game so vividly. The 10am kickoff. A freezing Sunday in December. Mollie and I were in D.C. visiting her bro for the holidays, I was adamant we’d find a place to watch the World Cup Final. After scouting bars around Logan Circle, we landed on The Admiral. Showing up at 9am to a line 50 deep told me everything. This was the spot. By 9:30, it was packed. We grabbed 2 bar seats, saving the others with our coats. The energy was unreal. Fans from everywhere, a French couple next to us who didn’t speak English, vuvuzelas echoing through the bar. At 10am, it all began. What followed was the single greatest sporting event I’ve ever witnessed. On the biggest stage, the best players delivered moments I still can’t believe; Di Maria, Mbappé’s 2nd, Messi off the bar in the 96th. It was 2–0 in the 70th! Even the penalties, my only blemish, couldn’t take away from it. This is the Gold Standard. How I measure all others. THE PERFECT 10.

By far the greatest sporting event I have ever watched. This game had so much hype going into it. Obviously the possibility of this being Messi’s final chance to win a World Cup was on everyone’s mind, but Mbappé was looking to join the likes of Pele in Football history as the first nation to repeat as World Cup champions since Brazil did it. It was the greatest player of his generation vs a legend in the making. The first 80 minutes were full of Argentinian brilliance. Messi was probably the best player on the field, but he didn’t have to carry the load himself anymore as Argentina led 2-0. Then, Mbappé happened. 2 goals in less than 2 minutes to tie it up as Argentina held on for dear life. We got extra time where Messi and Mbappé matched each other in goals and Emi Martinez made the most important save in World Cup history. Finally, we got a dramatic penalty shootout where Argentina prevailed. In the words of Peter Drury: “Messi has conquered his final peak”. Absolutely incredible.

I think this is one of the greatest matches ever, just the way that everybody came together and everything worked out, Mbappé had his whole arc unfold in front of the world while Messi proved what we already knew, just was all spectacular. Winter World Cup for the win.

I fully believe this is the greatest soccer game of all time. completely cements Lionel Messi as the greatest of all time. the star power in this game, extra time and penalties, the "happy" ending and the fact it was on the biggest stage possible makes this next to perfect

Absolute cinema🚬

I will always stand by the take that sports are just as cinematic as actual cinema, and no game represents it more than this one.

I just wanted to come back to this game before the world cup. It was a not-so-crisp December morning in New York. I had just moved there the past summer, and I had to give up a bunch of subscriptions just to live. I didn't even have cable. Thankfully, I did have my phone, and realized that the World Cup final was that day. I had managed to stop by at a sports bar and get some buddies to watch the game with me. Person by person, it seemed like everybody was there. Then Messi scored. I think I genuinely went deaf right then and there. I realized I had just enough cash in my wallet to get me something to eat- a 12 dollar sports bar personal pizza -before my paycheck hit that night. As it went to penalties, I stopped eating and focused on that game and watched the penalties. And Argentina won. After that day is when I truly realized something. Sports, no matter what the kind, can unify cultures. No matter if you're rich, poor, black, white, or whatever, there will always be that one game.

As an American it's always wishful thinking every 4 years when the World Cup comes around because we will never be able to replicate anything like this. This being pushed to the Fall because of Covid made it more special for some reason. I think maybe because it was so refreshing to see people without masks at a big public sporting event. I forgot that Qatar was the host nation. This game felt like it was being played for the fate of mankind at certain points I can't really describe it another way there was something about it that seemed to transcend any sports game I've seen before or since. I think Messi had a lot to do with it. Mbappé played the evil villain so well even though he wasn't evil at all it's just that Messi had everything to lose. Maybe that's why, an entire life defined by one game and an entire country lifted up because of it. The streets of Buenos Aires celebrating in pure euphoria. The weight of 1,000 worlds lifted. What a game. What a memory!

Was the craziest final I've seen, wish we had more fans there live. Bangladesh had better fans than Qatar did at this world cup. Any country that watches soccer did. Still crazy that Mbappe doesn't havs a ballon dor but is probably the best player we've seen in world cups
