"Good snap. Good hold. And the kick is blocked! Appalachian State has stunned the college football world!" Shout-out to Lloyd Carr our QB CJ Carr's Grandad. Final Field Goal Recap. Michigan is ready to Kick a 37 yard field goal. Before the Play a Mountaineer WR Dexter Jackson prayed. "Lord, all good things must come to an end. But not today. Please. Not today." Sean Griffin snaps it perfectly to Zoltan Mesko. Jason Gingell Kicks it. ITS BLOCKED BY LYNCH!! Appalachian State became the first FCS team to ever defeat a ranked FBS opponent. The Wolverines were Number 5 In the Preseason Poll. After the game Michigan dropped out of the rankings. The Mountaineers vs Everybody.

This was not just one of the greatest college football upsets of all time, but one of the greatest upsets in all of sports! Michigan came into this game as national title favorites, and App State as complete nobodies. Michigan got this game started just how they wanted to with a quick touchdown, but App State responded right away with a long TD to set the tone for this game! The Wolverines did answer again, and the Mountaineers scored three straight touchdowns to take a shocking lead into halftime! Armanti Edwards played the first half of his life, but he tried to sell hard with three brutal turnovers that let Michigan back into this game. Mike Hart was the key contributor with three huge TDs, and he gave the Wolverines the lead with less than 5 minutes left. Thankfully for this story, App State responded! A very late field goal gave them the lead, but Michigan hit a hail mary and had a chance to win with a short field goal! Somehow, Corey Lynch blocked it as Michigan was stunned!

APPALACHIAN STATE HAS STUNNED THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL WORLD! ONE OF THE GREATEST UPSETS IN SPORTS HISTORY! An all-time call for an all-time game. It cannot be understated how shocking this upset was. If you don’t believe me, here are some quotes from around this time: “They don’t want to see Appalachian State. They don’t want to see easy non-conference games” - Kirk Herbstreit, 2007 “In college we start every season against Appalachian State or some slack division 2 team, kick the living shit out of them” - Adam Sandler, Longest Yard, 2005 THAT was the perception of App State! Whenever people thought about small schools that couldn’t hang with the big boys, App State was the first that came to mind. Michigan was a championship contender while boasting Heisman contender Mike Hart and future 1st overall pick Jake Long. A 4th quarter interception should’ve been a death blow, but 2 blocked field goals won the day, including a legendary play from Corey Lynch to cap off an amazing game.

continues to be hilarious til this day a classic choke job in the PIG HOUSE 🤣 Mike Hart was absolutley ridiculous on the field phew, that 60-yard td run late in the fourth was nasty. Corey Lynch is an absolute dog for blockin the field goal and then hawkin the ball down and still tryin to take it back for six even after the game was already over.

I have a vivid memory of the field goal block because it was all SportsCenter played for pretty much that entire CFB season. It was a part of every single montage of top plays or sports highlights because of how shocking it was. I didn't fully comprehend the implausibility of a program like App State beating a preseason Natty contender in Michigan at THEIR place. This upset win helped them become the first FCS team to ever receive votes in the final Associated Press poll and is recognized as one of the biggest upsets in American Sports history.

App State is still living off the reputation they built during this game 19 years later!! In 2008 the University reported a 15% increase in the amount of applications the school got compared to 2007. It helped to begin to grow App State into one of the bigger small school brands and helped App State get to FBS in 2014. Another fun fact I found when reading online was this was the first game on BTN Network which is kinda funny to me that they put this powerhouse on for the first game of their brand new network and then they lost to an FCS school! Classic for any CFB fan!

I can remember watching this and stifling my enthusiasm and excitement that Appalachian State might pull it off. This was during a time that upsets, especially regular season upsets, weren't happening much. I think the most shocking upset I can remember before this one was Memphis beating Peyton Mannings Tennessee team in 96. So I didn't want to celebrate early. When the game ended and they won it felt like a funeral or like something terrible happened lol. The commentary was in shock it's like they were afraid to say it .... Almost like they would get in trouble. I just remembered how weird it felt and then it was the only story for a couple weeks ... Then South Florida started beating everyone and got ranked

. This was before social media really had the power it does now so we got to really sit in the moment and feel it, share that feeling with everyone around.... It was pretty electric and unbelievable.

This is the best possible game to be the first CFB classic on RateGame. This is the greatest upset in sports history and it would start the most chaotic season in CFB history. App State was in the FCS at the time and Michigan was top 5 in the nation. Yet Michigan found themselves down 28-17 at halftime. Michigan would start to fight back in the second half and take a 32-31 lead with 4 minutes left and got an interception right after that and looked like they would barely survive. But App State wouldn't give up, and they would drive down the field to kick the game winning field goal with 26 seconds left. But Michigan would get in field goal range after a 46 yard pass and all they had to do was make a 37 yard field goal and they win. But App State safety Corey Lynch was the hero and blocked the game winning field goal to complete the upset. The crazy thing is App State was terrible in the second half offensively. They had three turnovers in the second half, and a missed field goal.

Over recent years, we've seen a ton of big upsets in college football. Biggest examples being Northern Illinois and Marshall beating Notre Dame. But no upset is more memorable than this one. App State, as an FCS team at the time, coming into the Big House to face
#5
Michigan and somehow coming out with the victory. Up 28-17 at half time, but then, as everyone expected, Michigan came back and retook the lead 32-31, and it seemed like they would roll out with a win, although too close for comfort. But App State had other plans. They drove down the field and drilled a field goal to make it 34-32, and Corey Lynch blocked Michigan's last chance at victory. One of the greatest college football games of all time.

Oregon also beat them this year, I think in part due to this game, which was a springboard to their success in the years that followed.
