FINALLY. If you know me, you know I’ve been eagerly anticipating Honzek’s first NHL goal and it happened in this game. This game instantly gets a boost just for that. But this game felt like many Flames games this season, flashes of good play, followed up with getting dominated. Still can’t play a full 60 minutes. Seeing Knies and Domi score made me think about the Leafs’ GM. When Brad Treliving was hired by the Leafs, I thought it would be fun to look back at all the moves he made as Flames GM and decide if he was a good GM or if he held us back. I won’t spoil the answer to that question as I want to make a video essay about it, but one thing I discovered is Brad Treliving loves big forwards, it’s all over his tenures with the Coyotes, Flames and Leafs. So believe me when I say Matthew Knies is his dream forward and Max Domi is one of Treliving’s favourite players. They both made his dreams come true tonight.

Well, this is now one of my least favourite games of the season, just for that 1st period alone. Instead of playing good to start and then getting our asses kicked after, the Flames decided to switch it up and put ourselves in a hole thanks some poor defense, contribute to Wolf getting pulled. Can’t even say the goalies got peppered as we actually outshot the Predators in every period. The 2nd period was bland, but they did try to make the comeback in the 3rd thanks to both Huby and Farabee, but it was too little too late. Now, trying to be positive, Coleman, Kadri and Huby played well enough to at least not hurt their trade value. Meanwhile Honzek continues to earn my heart with his efforts.

The Flames’ biggest weakness… scoring 4 goals and taking too many penalties. Just like every game so far, there are flashes of good play, but a lot of bad that leaves Wolf out to dry, the Jets took full advantage in the 2nd and the Flames couldn’t come back. For the Jets, Josh Morrissey was amazing tonight. He carved the Flames up, set up so many goals and played some great defense to boot. I know I sound like a broken record, but I really like what I see from Honzek, his forechecking has really improved, he basically created the Backlund goal with his forechecking. Also, FIRST PAREKH ASSIST. Yeah, it was secondary, but I’ll take it at this point. Of course, the Jets earned this win; the Flames kept shooting themselves in the foot, taking away their own powerplays with reckless penalties was killer. Last two minutes was intense as the Flames tired desperately to tie it up, but the Jets hung on.

I was hopeful, but Vegas continues to have the Flames’ number. Ryan Huska loves hard working forwards and the Flames showed that off in the 1st period. Outworking the Golden Knights and the score showed that. But as the game went on, the Golden Knights slowly crawled their way into this game and eventually took control of it, led by Jack Eichel. Weegar and Honzek really impressed me and Wolf did all he could as Miromanov is trying to prove to Flames management that it was a mistake to trade for him. Wolf did his best, but he can’t score the goals. Tough pill to swallow, but hey, nothing we can do now. All we can do is hope the Mammoth game goes better, a lot of pressure on Cooley as he’s likely playing for his backup spot.

I had a hunch this game would go poorly, did not expect it to go THAT poorly. Marner officially makes his first statement as a Golden Knight while Eichel continues to make his case for the Hart Trophy and Stone is still very good despite LTIR. Doesn’t help when you leave the Knights wide open in the slot multiple times right before screening Wolf each time. Believe it or not, this game could’ve been EVEN WORSE if not for Wolf. Other than the early scramble that led to the Huby goal (a feel-good moment), the Flames got kicked up and down the ice. They fought hard in the 1st, but completely collapsed in the 2nd, then their corpse just twitched in the 3rd, with Cooley coming in for relief. Were there positives? Sure. Besides the Huby goal, Parekh looked more comfortable as PP QB, Honzek continues to impress and Zary was great. Besides that… woof. I know it’s early, but I have a hunch this is not going to be a fun season. The vibes are collapsing from the eternal highs they were at before.

This game was truly scrappy vs. flash and it played like it. I fear the vibes are not as elite as they were last season for my Flames, but that doesn’t mean they have gone to hell. 1st period was a back and forth grind-fest. Then the 2nd was ALL Mammoth as the Flames only made it tough on themselves. Finally, the Flames got genuine pressure in the 3rd, but they couldn’t capitalize. I felt this was a make-or-break game for Devin Cooley and his job as the backup. I would say he passed the test. Now, if you had told me he had played well, I would’ve assumed we won, but it wasn’t meant to be. Although it sucked to see them beat my team and Utah continues to be the bane of my Flames, I can’t deny that they’re super fun to watch. Peterka and Marino in particular were great tonight. I still need Honzek’s first goal, he’s really impressed me. Hope he stays when Huby and Pospisil come back.
