I’m not sure if a player has carried a team as hard as Keaton Wagler just carried Illinois. He was the only player with double digit points until there was less than a minute left. He scored more than half of Illinois’s points. He is just the 5th freshman EVER to score 46 points in a single game. It is the most points any visiting player has ever scored in Purdue’s building. His 75% shooting from the field is the 5th most efficient ever for a freshman 40-point game, tied with Ben Simmons in 2015. His 82% shooting from 3rd best ever for a 40-point game from a freshman. Somehow, this game remained close until the end and it was thanks to Wagler they were able to finally pull away. Purdue’s defense shifted almost entirely to stop Wagler from scoring. So the kid wisely passed out of double teams and helped his team make four 3s in a row to give them a lead they would never give up. The offensive rebounds were also huge to keep them alive, but if not for Wagler, they probably get destroyed.
