NHL Reg. Season02/06/2026
Every player has a debut. Every player has a ‘Welcome to the NHL’ moment. It is very rare that a player forces their opponent to join their welcome party. Avery Hayes is one of those players. He is the first rookie since Jake Guentzel and Austin Matthews back in 2016 to score multiple 1st period goals in his debut. He scored them both in brilliant fashion. The first one he got by zooming past the Sabres’ defense and he got the other one off a behind the back pass from Mantha. Beyond just an incredible performance from the rookie, it also helped the Penguins bounce back after the Sabres held control for the first 8 minutes and change. I genuinely believe Hayes shifted the momentum in this game with his 1st period goals. Kindel would add to the Pens’ lead less than halfway through the 2nd. Tage Thompson did cut their deficit in half early in the 3rd and had his fair share of chances, but the Sabres could never take tie it up. Silovs shut the door. Great performance from the Penguins.
