“I’m torn. On one hand, I love great pitching and there was A LOT of great pitching in this game. On the other hand, in a game containing most of the game’s best hitters, we saw a grand total of 10 combined hits and most of them came in the first inning. Speaking of that 1st inning, the AL immediately grabbed the lead with a prolonged rally as Sánchez was probably wishing Ohtani had been around to start instead of him. Meanwhile, Dylan Cease struck out the side and set the tone for what this game would become. Out of the 11 pitchers the AL used, only 3 of them gave up a hit and it was 1 each. So even though the AL’s lead was not big, the NL could never do enough damage to actually threaten it. There were more pitchers that struck out multiple batters than gave up a hit. Vargas’s home run was the exclamation point on a dominant AL victory. Ultimately, I cannot deny that I enjoyed the pitching brilliance (especially Latz’s 1 strikeout), but I also can’t act like this was an exciting game.”
