Tarik Skubal started the game for the Tigers. He would face Matthew Boyd, his former teammate. The Tigers pitching only gave up three hits all game. Skubal got out of the fifth and sixth innings from double plays. He finished his night after seven innings. In the top of the 8th, Hunter Gaddis was put in to pitch. Matt Vierling doubled with one out. Colt Keith struck out. Riley Greene was intentionally walked. Emmanuel Clase was put in to pitch. Wenceel Pérez hit a line drive out to shallow left center field, where Steven Kwan made an incredible diving catch to save at least one run and end the inning. The Tigers challenged this catch because it looked like it may have hit the ground. After the review, the call stood because there wasn’t enough information to overturn the call. I believe that the ball hit the edge of Kwan’s glove and stayed on the leather, which would be a catch. In the bottom of the 8th, Will Vest pitched for the Tigers. After a line out and a strike out to start the inning, Kyle Manzardo launched a deep fly ball to center field. Parker Meadows leaped at the wall to make an amazing catch and end the inning. Clase pitched the top of the 9th for the Guardians. He got a strike out and a pop out to start the inning. Jake Rogers hit a single. Trey Sweeney hit a single. Then Kerry Carpenter launched a deep fly ball to right field for a three run homer to take a lead in the 9th off of the best closer this season. That was the first home run that Clase had given up to a lefty since 2022. Beau Brieske pitched the bottom of the 9th for the Tigers. He got a fly out and two strike outs to end the game and secure a save. Overall, this game was one of the most entertaining that I had watched in a while due to the fact that there were many tough situations that the pitchers continued to escape, yet somehow the only runs to come across home plate came with two outs in the 9th. Tarik Skubal’s final line: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K on 92 pitches. Matthew Boyd’s final line: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K on 72 pitches.
