“The Lions of Mesopotamia have risen from the ashes with their most important win since their legendary win in the 2007 Asian Cup final. The final World Cup qualification game between 2 teams that desperately wanted that last spot. You could feel it just watching both these teams try to scratch, claw and dive their way to accomplishing a dream. I’d say the deserving team won, but only my the smallest of margins. It really felt like Iraq knew all they had to do was hold the line and they’d go back to the World Cup. So they did exactly that. Stayed back and let Bolivia attack as much as they wanted. If you ignore the shot disparity by the end of it, I would point to the obscene amount of corners Bolivia got compared to Iraq as well as just the fact it felt like Bolivia was either in or on the edge of Iraq’s box for the last 20 minutes. Sadly, Bolivia just couldn’t get a dangerous shot off and they were forced to wait a bit longer for their first ever World Cup appearance.”
