WBC Championship03/21/2023
Not only a legendary ending to an iconic WBC, but also a game that officially indicated the changing of the guard. That final at-bat was straight out of a movie. Mike Trout, the clear-cut best player of the 2010s vs. Shohei Ohtani, poised to become the clear-cut best player of the 2020s. Don’t forget, this was when they were still teammates on the Angels so it was a matchup we had never seen in a competitive setting. Ohtani striking out Trout swinging was the perfect way to end this game and officially pass the torch. The Angels deserve sanctions for their crimes while having those two together. Ironically, neither played a significant role before the ending. The USA generated more hits, but couldn’t get more than 2 runs from a couple solo shots. Meanwhile, Japan got less chances but made the absolute best of it thanks to Murakami and Okamoto. Instead, this was a tight pitching battle between these stacked rosters and of course it was the unicorn Ohtani who saved the day for Japan.
