“Texas Tech enter this tournament knowing they were gonna miss Toppin’s points and rebounds. Unfortunately for Akron, they found the points and rebounds from other sources. Ironically, offensive rebounds weren’t the name of the game. The name of the game was hitting their shots while making sure Akron couldn’t get 2nd chances. They dominated the glass on the defensive end and shot really well from everywhere with Atwell and Petty leading the way. Still, Akron made it close at halftime with a strong run of their own and mistakes from Texas Tech, it looked like they still had a chance. Only got the Red Raiders to start the 2nd half with back-to-back 3s to get their lead back to double digits. Don’t get it twisted, Akron never went away. Texas Tech never led by 15 and couldn’t to take it easy down the stretch. At the same time, it never felt like Akron couldn’t close the gap. Which only got worse when Texas Tech finally got that 15-point lead thanks to a 15-3 run late in the 2nd half.”
