While the animosity from the 90s and 2000s is no longer there, the rivalry could make a comeback. Unfortunately, the Colorado Avalanche leave Detroit with a commanding victory. Colorado showed no mercy early on, Brent Burns and Nathan MacKinnon sniped a couple quick goals and the score never got close again. Although, it’s important to note that the scoreboard doesn’t tell the full story. After that, the Red Wings managed to keep up on the ice, just not on the scoreboard. Sure, the Avs’ speed was definitely catching Detroit on their heels, but that happens to every team they play. Not every team can fall over and get back on their toes for the attack. The problem in that regard was two-fold. Colorado’s D-core was doing a good job protecting their goalie, blocking shots and preventing a lot of chances in the slot. Even when Detroit managed to beat their structure, Blackwood was always there to make the save. Including a sprawling pad save late in the 3rd that put the cherry on top.
