To beat the Colorado Avalanche, you need 3 things: good enough goaltending, finishing and speed. Luckily, the Flyers had all 3 tonight. When did Sam Ersson get good? With 2 minutes to go in the 1st period; the score was 2-0 Flyers and the shots were 17-6 in favour of Colorado. That sums up the 1st perfectly. To give credit to Philly, they generated those good looks and made them count. The Flyers are not a super fast team, they rank middle of the pack in that category. Luckily, Ersson was solid, albeit not infallible as the Avs broke through him in the 2nd. So they needed their finishing and speed to come through. Owen Tippet was the embodiment of both. His speed was throwing off Colorado all over the place, but especially on rush chances and takeaways. His short-handed goal was a thing of beauty with him taking away the Avs’ powerplay possession and basically ending any chance of a comeback with a goal. It was genuinely fun to watch, despite this game being decided 45 minutes into it.
