The Capitals eventually smothered the Flames. It wasn’t easy. 1st period was basically a stalemate if you don’t look at the scoreboard. I’d say the Caps played better by just a tiny bit, but the Flames came out of it with a 1-0 lead. Frost was terrific on the forecheck and it got him a goal. Devin Cooley continues to make a case as the best backup in the NHL with another great outing tonight. Unfortunately, he and the Flames would be unlucky. Albeit it is their own fault because the Flames couldn’t get much sustained pressure and relied on their Defense and goaltending to keep them it. Kuznetsov was particularly great in this regard until we got a feel-good moment when Hendrix Lapierre scored his first NHL goal in 91 games, thanks to an unlucky bounce off of Yan Kuznetsov’s leg. Flames remained sturdy at the back, even as the Caps held onto the puck for longer and longer. they only needed one lucky bounce off Hanley and Protas made the most of it for the winner. Flames never got close.
