“WE SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST! Algeria and Austria could have coasted and taken a simple draw to move on, but neither team wanted that and they played an all-time classic while doing everything in their power to eliminate the other. After some slow play, Austria struck first thanks to a gorgeous feed from David Alaba. Then as a preview for the later craziness, the corner flag keeps the ball in to allow Belghali to find a way into the box and blast it into the goal. Somehow that was only the appetizer. Austria took the lead back in the 2nd half thanks to a well-placed shot from Sabitzer and they looked in control. But then something miraculous happened. Back in 1982, Austria screwed over Algeria in their final group game. 24 years later, Riyad Mahrez refused to let Austria do it again. He looked like a man possessed and willed Algeria back into the game. His 95th minute goal looked like the winner only for Austria to tie it on the literal final play of the game. Bravo to both these squads”
