Matthew Boyd started for the Guardians. The Yankees started Clarke Schmidt. Boyd walked two and left them on base in the 1st. In the bottom half, Steven Kwan walked. Kyle Manzardo singled. They were followed by a strike out and two groundouts. 0-0 after 1 inning. Boyd struck out Jon Berti. He walked Anthony Volpe and gave up a double to Alex Verdugo. Jose Trevino singled Volpe in. Trevino got picked off and caught stealing second. Gleyber Torres ended the inning on a fly out. Clarke Schmidt got the Guardians to go down in order in the bottom half. 1-0 Yankees after 2 innings. Boyd got the gauntlet of Yankee hitters to go down in order in the third. Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton all grounded out. In the bottom half of the 3rd, Brayan Rocchio reached base on an infield single. Kwan flew out. Then Manzardo hit a two run homer to put the Guardians up 2-1 after 3 innings. The only baserunner in the whole 4th inning was Austin Hedges on a double. The only runner in the whole 5th inning was Jose Ramirez on a double. In the 6th, the Guardians put Cade Smith in to pitch. He faced the Yankees gauntlet and put them down in order. Ian Hamilton started the 6th for the Yankees. He walked Lane Thomas. He got Daniel Schneeman to ground out, moving Thomas to second. The Yankees put in Tim Mayza, who gave up an RBI single to Andres Giménez singled. Mayza escaped the inning without any further harm. No runs were scored in the 7th inning. Hunter Gaddis was put in to pitch the 8th for the Guardians. He struck out Austin Wells and induced a groundout of Torres. He walked Soto. Stephen Vogt, the Guardians manager, elected to put Emmanuel Clasé in to relieve Gaddis. He gave up a game tying two run homer to Judge. He gave up a homerun to Stanton right after to five the Yankees a 4-3 lead. The Guardians couldn’t score in the 8th. Eli Morgan started the 9th for the Guardians. Volpe walked. He got Verdugo to ground into a fielder’s choice, but Ramirez made an error, allowing Volpe to reach third base and Verdugo to second. Wells struck out. Andrew Walter’s was inserted into the game to relieve Morgan. Torres hit a sacrifice fly. Soto struck out. 5-3 Yankees through 8 and a half innings. Luke Weaver came in to pitch the 9th and get the save for the Yankees. Ramirez reached on an error by Anthony Rizzo. Josh Naylor grounded into a double play. The game and series looked dead as ever for the Guardians. Then Lane Thomas doubled. The tying run came up to the plate. Jhonkensy Noel pinch hit for Schneeman. On a 1-0 pitch, Noel (aka Big Christmas) blasted a homer to the left field seats. Tie game. Giménez struck out to end the inning. Pedro Avila pitched the 10th for the Guardians. He struck out Judge. Stanton walked. Jazz Chisholm Jr grounded out. Rizzo was intentionally walked to bring up Volpe, who struck out to end the top half of the 10th. Clay Holmes pitched the bottom half. Bo Naylor singled to lead off the inning. Rocchio sacrificed to the pitcher (bunt) to move Naylor to second. Steven Kwan grounded out. David Fry came up to the plate. On a 1-2 count, Fry blasted a 96 mph sinker 399 feet to left-center. Game over. Rollercoaster over. Guardians win, 7-5. Matthew Boyd’s final line: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K on 75 pitches.
