NHL Reg. Season02/26/2026
A team outperforming expectations vs. A team falling well-short of expectations, will the narratives shift? No, they did not. At first, it looked like the Devils would carry Jack Hughes’s golden momentum into their season. After some balanced play, the ice tilted in their favour, even when the Sabres had a powerplay New Jersey had the best chance. The Devils dictated play in the 2nd, but it would be Tage Thompson who broke the deadlock with a good counter. The most fight the Devils showed after that was Siegenthaler won a fight with Jason Zucker. Despite getting the better chances and hanging onto the puck longer, it was ironically a Jack Hughes giveaway/Tage takeaway that led to the Sabres doubling their lead. Ironically it took the Swiss Timo Meier and a 6-on-5 to get a goal for New Jersey. Although the Devils couldn’t tie it, Jack Hughes had some sweet dangles and nearly had another iconic moment only for Bowen Byram to block his shot. If he scores that, this game gets a 9.
