In the 2007 season, the Baltimore Ravens finished 5-11. It was a season that was uncharacteristic for a team that had been elite just last year before losing a heartbreaker in the divisional round. Despite a great season from their elite running back, their offense was bad, partially due to QB injuries. Even more notable was the uncharacteristic bad defense. Sure, they still had the best safety in the NFL, but he alone couldn’t save this team. Despite playing tough against a dominant Patriots team, they suffered some humiliating losses, including a 32-14 loss with 5 games to go, that caused them to miss the playoffs in a wasted and frustrating season. Sound familiar? I’m sure it does, history has repeated itself and the Ravens need to do exactly what they did all those years ago. Fire the best head coach in franchise history and find a new voice. In 2007, that was Brian Billick, John Harbuagh came in and gave them new life. Now, Harbaugh is Brian Billick. Jesse Minter can be next.

Well, this is officially John Harbaugh’s final game as Ravens head coach with the news of his dismissal. While I am happy they made this move and despite my frustrations with him in recent years, I can’t hate the best head coach in Ravens history.
I alluded to it before, but he rejuvenated this team when he first arrived. Took rookie Joe Flacco to the AFC title game in his first season. During his time with us, we made 4 AFC title games. 3rd most during his tenure, only behind the dynasties in New England and Kansas City. Of course, he won us Super Bowl 47 when nobody expected us to and made me a lifelong Ravens fan because of it. However, his most impressive feat is being the all time leader in road playoff wins with 8. He’s 7th all time in playoff wins as well.
Most importantly, he steered us into the next era of Ravens football. After seeing the end of the Ray Lewis-Ed Reed era and a couple underrated seasons, he successfully helped us transition into the Lamar Jackson era. He doesn’t get enough credit for it but his adaptability is an underrated skill that helped us transition almost seamlessly.
Despite how it ended, I am thankful that we had John Harbaugh as our head coach for 18 seasons. He’ll surely be put in the Ravens’ Ring of Honour and will have a decent chance at a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Even in his final game, he handled the heartbreaking loss with class and leadership by consoling Tyler Loop and standing up for his guys, one last time. As we’ve seen with Todd Bowles, that behaviour isn’t guaranteed nor easy.
Thank you for everything John, I wish you the best in your next step of life. But now was the right time to end an era. Now… about Jesse Minter.
