“So much of the talk before this game was about how Miami of Ohio was doomed to get exposed. Those voices got mighty quiet after this game. Miami led for most of this game. It was still easy to think SMU still had a shot, this was no one-sided affair. Aside from a 13-2 run around the mid-point of the first half and a 13-0 run at the mid-point of the 2nd half (right after SMU tied the game at 50), this game was pretty close. Although I’d never suggest SMU was dominant against Miami, they definitely gave Miami chances to overcome adversity and prove their doubters wrong. The biggest reason they were able to do that was their 3-point shooting with Elmer leading the way. He hit 6 of their 16 3s as a team. Byers and Skalojac also hit 7 combined 3s. It propelled them to victory in a genuine proving ground. Say what you want how their season ended in the next round, but Miami of Ohio has plenty to be proud of when looking back, including this win and an appearance in the NCAA tournament.”
