“Great game that came down to the wire and ended with a whimper. MAJOR playoff implications in this one. The Red Wings, who were 2nd in the Atlantic and had the 3rd best record in the Eastern conference in February, have found a way to miss the playoffs once again. Meanwhile, this loss officially clinched the playoffs for the Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators. How on Earth did it happen again? Well, this game could be a microcosm of why their season fell apart. They choked. There’s no other way to describe it. The Red Wings were the better term through 2 periods. I wouldn’t say they dominated, the scale just leaned in their direction. They managed to find goals only for New Jersey to match them at every step. It all fell apart in the last 10 minutes of the 3rd when New Jersey controlled play while getting many chances. The dam finally broke and Detroit didn’t have any resilience to recover and give New Jersey any scare. Just like their season, it ended on a whimper after a final push. ”
