UMBC dismantled Virginia with their modern playstyle, as the Hoos' old fashioned defense left sharpshooters open, the Retrievers shot 50% beyond the arc, compared to an abysmal 18% from the Cavaliers. The bored Virginia offense had numerous faults that worked against them most of the time, as the lead stretched to 20 points! The result? First 16-seed to beat a 1. Funnily enough, Virginia saved face by winning the national championship the next year, and the coach for UMBC at the time of the upset, Ryan Odom, now coaches 3-seed Virginia in March Madness '26.”
