“Exhilarating matchup that went as poorly as it possibly could have for Barcelona. Every time you think Diego Simeone is finished and his schtick has become stale, he finds a way. Barcelona’s attack was elegant and intimidating as it often is, especially with Yamal. However, Atleti was able to absorb that pressure thanks to their bruising and ruthless back line that Simeone prides himself in. No Oblak, no problem. They’ll just throw in Musso and he’ll make the saves he has to. Even with this, they still need goals. For that, they looked at Julian Alvarez. He set the tone with a crazy solo run that nearly led to a goal and was a threat all game. Right before halftime, Barca were dealt a lethal blow. Cubarsi, one of their better defenders, was sent off with a red card. This meant they wouldn’t have him for the 2nd leg and they were down to 10 men. Alvarez added salt into the wound with a gorgeous free kick to make it 1-0. He’d score again in the 2nd half to seal it up.”
