A classic rivalry in the modern day, just with faster skaters and less bullying. The Broad Street Bullies were rolling in their graves as the Flyers just couldn’t get any sustained momentum nor fight back. To be fair, neither could the Islanders. Both teams were playing a very conservative game and it resulted in a slow game. I would argue that put the Flyers at a disadvantage. The Islanders have Ilya Sorokin, arguably the best goaltender in the NHL and elite no matter how you look at it while Sam Ersson is very much not elite. To be completely fair to him, the skaters in front of him were not helping. The first goal was absolutely brutal from the skaters and Ersson, giving away the puck for free to Pageau. Pageau’s 2nd goal was completely on the skaters, a bad giveaway and worse coverage on the rush set up Ersson for doom. Islanders played mistake-free hockey and their elite goaltender never faltered. While the Flyers looked outmatched to the point the fan booed them. Tough crowd.
