“Canada’s first ever men’s knockout game ends with jubilation! Let it rain Maple Syrup! Canada earned this win, but South Africa didn’t make it easy whatsoever. It was full of sloppy play, hard fouls, poor positioning and tension so thick you could cut it with a knife, but it gave us a moment that will instantly become forever iconic in Canadian sports lore. Stephen Eustaquio loaded up at the top of the box and coolly launched the ball into the bottom left corner for Canada’s first ever goal in the knockout stage and the goal that won their first ever knockout game Les Rouges were trying to go through the wings and South Africa was doing an excellent job closing them off to the point that only individual brilliance could break the press. Despite all that, we managed to get the best chances and came oh so close to taking the lead multiple chances prior to the 92 minute. Eventually, all that pressure finally paid off and we won the game. This is a moment and game I will remember forever.”
