Welsh-Ryan Arena
WildcatsOverview
Welsh-Ryan Arena is the home of Northwestern Wildcats basketball, volleyball, and wrestling in Evanston, Illinois. Following a $110 million renovation completed in 2018, it offers an intimate, modern experience with a capacity deliberately set at 7,039 to honor Northwestern hosting the first NCAA Tournament in 1939. The arena features expanded concourses, premium seating, and natural lighting. It is the smallest arena in the Big Ten Conference, creating an especially intense atmosphere.
History & Legacy
Originally opened as McGaw Memorial Hall on December 6, 1952, the venue hosted the 1956 NCAA Final Four. It was renamed Welsh-Ryan Arena in 1983 following renovations. The 2016-2018 renovation reduced capacity from approximately 9,500 to create a more intimate fan experience. The arena continues to be a cherished venue for Northwestern athletics and the Evanston community.
