Burr Gymnasium is the home of Howard Bison basketball in Washington, D.C. Opened in 1963, the multipurpose facility serves Howard University, a historically Black university competing in the MEAC, and also hosts the women's volleyball team. Its close, no-frills seating bowl gives Bison games a tight, community-driven atmosphere on Howard's campus.
The gym is named for John Harold Burr Jr., who chaired Howard's physical education department from 1923 to 1958. Seating about 2,700, it has remained the Bison's home court for basketball and volleyball for over six decades with no major capacity changes on record. It stands as a longstanding fixture of athletics at one of the nation's most prominent HBCUs, and a gathering place central to Howard's campus culture.
